Synopsis
15/213 AM.

A warming and drying trend is expected over the weekend into next week. Gusty northerly winds are expected across the mountains and southern Santa Barbara County this weekend and most of next week.

Short Term - Today through Monday
...15/247 AM.

Three days of very pleasant weather on tap. Skies are partly cloudy save for North Slopes of the VTA/LA mtns as well as the Cuyama and interior SLO valleys where upslope clouds have been created by northerly flow. There is a 4 mb offshore push from the north and this has produced 25 to 35 mph gusts down the I-5 corridor into Santa Clarita, through the western San Fernando Vly and then out through the eastern Santa Monica mtns. NE wind gusts 20 to 30 mph were also occuring in the mtns of SLO and SBA counties. The sunshine, higher hgts from a building ridge and the offshore flow will all combine to bring 4 to 8 degrees of warming to the area with cst/vly highs away from the beaches mostly in the mid 60s to lower 70s.

Look for another chilly night in the wind sheltered areas in the interior as clear skies will allow for maximum radiational cooling.

Plenty of mid and high level clouds are forecast to stream into the area from the Pacific on Sunday. Despite the cloudiness continued offshore flow and hgts near 584 dam will bring another 2 to 5 degrees of warming. Look for cst/vly highs mostly in the mid 60s to lower 70s with a smattering of mid 70s in the warmest vly. Max temps away form the beaches will be 3 to 6 degrees above normal.

Falling hgts and a switch to onshore flow from the west (the northerly offshore flow remaining in place) will bring some low clouds to southern LA county. The bigger effect will be a 2 to 4 cool down across the csts/vlys.

Long Term - Tuesday through Friday
15/302 AM.

Good mdl agreement on Tuesday and Wednesday with a ridge forecast for Tuesday and a trough on Wednesday. Good offshore flow from the north will bring another round of gusty northerly winds to favored N/S oriented passes and canyons. An eddy may bring some low clouds to the LA csts and lower vlys. The north flow will likely bring upslope clouds to the north slopes. Wednesday's trough will clear out the clouds and skies will be partly cloudy. Cool air from the interior will bring reduced temps across the interior and will offset the usual warming effects of the offshore flow on Tuesday. The lack of this cool air advection on Wednesday will bring warming to the area despite the trough.

Deterministic and ensemble based models still struggling with the fast flow pattern at the end of the week. Conditions will be dry and there is a good chance that there will be enough offshore flow from the north to bring gusty northerly canyon winds in the morning. But it looks like there is about a 50/50 chance of a trough or a ridge either day which would affect the temperature and cloud forecasts.

Marine
15/114 AM.

For the Outer Waters, high confidence in current forecast. For today, Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level winds and seas will continue through this afternoon, before diminishing this evening and overnight. For Sunday through Wednesday, winds will once again increase to SCA (Small Craft Advisory) levels with periods of SCA (Small Craft Advisory) level seas also developing.

For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, moderate to high confidence in current forecast. High confidence in SCA (Small Craft Advisory) level seas diminishing by this afternoon with winds and seas remaining below SCA (Small Craft Advisory) levels this afternoon and tonight. For Sunday through Monday, there is a 60% chance of SCA (Small Craft Advisory) level winds in the afternoon and evening hours. For Tuesday and Wednesday, there is a 30-40% chance of SCA (Small Craft Advisory) level winds in the afternoon and evening hours.

For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, moderate to high confidence in current forecast. For a majority of the southern Inner Waters, high confidence in winds and seas remaining below SCA (Small Craft Advisory) levels through Wednesday. The only exception will be the western half of the Santa Barbara Channel where there is a 50-60% chance of SCA (Small Craft Advisory) level winds Sunday afternoon through Monday night.

Beaches
15/114 AM.

A large, long period, westerly swell will gradually diminish across the coastal waters today. This will result in the high surf conditions diminishing through this afternoon.
