Synopsis
Mild, but unsettled weather returns this weekend as another system moves through the area. In particular, a strong cold front will bring windy and rainy conditions on Sunday. Dry and cool weather returns for Monday and Tuesday, before rain chances return for the middle of next week.

Some low clouds are lingering around due to the coastal trough still offshore. Minor updates made to hourly dewpoints for the

Near Term - Through Tonight
High pressure located over the northeast will continue offshore tonight ahead of a storm system and its cold front, with a coastal trough located just offshore currently. This trough will push inland through the morning as the high continues out to sea, with southerly flow building in. This will cause moisture to start to increase with PWATs (Precipitable Waters) +1". Some surges of shortwave energy ahead of the system's warm front will move through aloft before the front pushes through tonight with a swath of moisture that could lead to some heavier rainfall, particularly near the coast. The passage of the coastal trough paired with cloudiness inland will cause a bit of temperature gradient over the area. Highs may struggle to reach 60 in our NW areas while temperatures near the coast will get into the mid to upper 60s. Increasing southerly winds, more uniform cloud cover, and overnight rainfall should lead to lows in the mid to upper 50s, closer to 60 near the coast.

Short Term - Sunday Through Sunday Night
A strong cold front and associated mid-level trough axis approach the area on Sunday. Ahead of these features, a pre-frontal trough will yield widespread showers from west to east starting early in the day, as its timing continues to speed up. This timing and poor thermodynamics mean the severe potential is rather low, however with strong wind shear and forcing there is a Marginal Risk (threat level 1 out of 5) of severe weather, with the main threat being damaging wind gusts. Even lightning is a stretch, due to the poor instability aloft and shallow nature of the convection. The rain should end Sunday afternoon as the front advances rather swiftly through the area, leading to a dry night. Other item of note is the potential for wind gusts up to 35-45 mph even outside of any convection, with that strong low-level jet in place. After high temps in the low 70s Sunday, strong post-frontal Cold Air Advection will mean low temps in the mid/upper 30s Sunday, potentially even lower in typical colder spots should winds decouple late.

Long Term - Monday Through Friday
Quiet and cool weather returns Monday and Tuesday as surface high pressure builds in from the west...high temps only in the 50s both days. Attention then turns to approaching southern stream energy and an associated developing surface low. Rain is likely to overspread the area on Wednesday, moderate to possibly heavy at times. With guidance in good agreement that the low will track directly over or just south of the area, the close proximity will favor liquid precip, however cannot rule out some frozen precipitation mixing in over northern areas briefly on the back side as the low quickly pushes offshore early Thursday. Strong Cold Air Advection to end the week means high temps only in the 40s Thursday and Friday, with even the potential for a Cold Weather Advisory (temps below 15F) Thursday night.

Marine
Through Tonight
A coastal trough will push onshore this morning as high pressure continues offshore to our northeast. This will increase S winds through the afternoon and evening, with Small Craft Advisory conditions due to +25 kt gusts and +6 ft seas beginning tonight. Shower chances will increase through the afternoon with a warm frontal passage late tonight. Conditions will continue to deteriorate through the end of the period as the pressure gradient increases ahead of a cold front.

Sunday through Wednesday... The SCA (Small Craft Advisory) in effect this evening through 7am Sunday ramps up to a Gale Warning daytime Sunday, with frequent gusts up to at least 35kt expected as a low-level jet moves over the waters. The Gale will eventually be replaced by a SCA (Small Craft Advisory) Sunday night as hazardous marine conditions continue following a cold frontal passage. Improving conditions thereafter through midweek as surface high pressure builds into the area.
