Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Lake Charles LA
455am CST Sat Feb 15 2025

.SHORT TERM... (Today through Monday night) Issued at 416am CST Sat Feb 15 2025

Light showers are over the eastern half of the CWA (County Warning Area) with low overcast clouds and areas of patchy fog. Well above average temperatures in the 60s to 70s have been noted across the area, thanks to the warm front lifting northward out of the gulf. Maximums today are expected to be in the upper 70s to 80s which is within 2 to 6 degrees of setting daily records.

The low is centered over the TX / OK panhandles with an attached cold front extending from it. Frontal passage ETA is this evening through Sunday morning. Before frontal passage. however, there will be a potential for weather hazards. Currently gusty southerly flow is expected to strengthen over the day. Forecast winds speeds as of this morning are close to Wind Advisory Criteria, and issuance in subsequent packages is possible. There is a Marginal to Enhanced Risk for severe weather across the area, with damaging wind gusts and tornadoes being the main hazards, though large hail cannot be ruled out.

Long Term
(Tuesday through Saturday) Issued at 416am CST Sat Feb 15 2025

A surface high pressure is expected to be over Canada, with ridging extending across the central to eastern conus. A surface low / trough will begin to take shape over MX / TX before pushing east northeastward over the gulf and CWA coastline. Ample moisture will move in, with showers and isolated storms likely from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning. There is a marginal risk for excessive rainfall during that time.

With cooler temperatures across our northern zones, it is not out of the realm of possibility to see wintry precip, however this will have to be monitored over the coming days. A cold front will assist in pushing lingering moisture out as the low moves off to the east. Below average temperatures are forecast from mid next week until the end of the forecast timeframe.

Marine
Issued at 416am CST Sat Feb 15 2025

Increasing southerly winds and building seas will continue until a cold front moves across tonight. Ahead of the cold front, showers and a few thunderstorms will develop. Behind the front, strong offshore flow will develop.
